Over 100 participants attended the October 24th DISASTER BOOT CAMP to learn the importance of preparedness and receive volunteer disaster training. The event was hosted by Crossings Community Center, Central Oklahoma Red Cross, and Office of Faith Based & Community Initiatives.

The FINANCIAL FORUM on September 22 dealt with the interpretation of and compliance with income tax laws, including recent changes, and accounting principles and procedures for faith based and community groups. Norma Woodard was the presenter. Sponsors included Bott Radio Network, Comtech, Global Training Network, Jasco, and Kimray.

The state-wide FAITHLINKS FATHERHOOD FORUM was held August 4th in Oklahoma City for fatherhood service providers, ministries, and government representatives. A team of trainers from Public Strategies presented sessions to promote healthy parenting and increase involvement of fathers in their children’s lives. Howard Hendrick, Director of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, was the featured speaker.

ARTFUL ASKERS , Oklahoma Family Policy Council, and the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives partnered in 2009 to bring four Artful Askers fundraising workshops to Oklahoma.

Change A Child's Forever LogoIn June and September, COMMUNITY GATHERINGS were organized in central Oklahoma and metro Tulsa as a part of the “Change A Child’s Forever” campaign. Local churches, business, government offices and individuals expressed their interest through attendance. Facilitated by Randy Martin of Covenant Community Services, the meeting presented a variety of opportunities to serve foster children and their families.
 
Change a Child's Forever Logo CHANGE A CHILD'S FOREVER was the theme for Foster Care Appreciation Month including the Change A Child's Forever Sunday/Weekend commemorated in faith congregations on May 16 and 17. OFBCI, with a little help from our friends, distributed over 20,000 information cards across the state on the Top 10 Things You Can Do For A Foster Child.
 
PRI Logo MENTORING FORUM/PRISONER REENTRY INITIATIVES (PRI). The first in the 2009 series of P.R.I. quarterly educational and networking forums was held on April 30, 2009 at Crossings Community Center in Oklahoma City. The topic was Mentoring and Support Groups. The featured speaker, Tom Pace, author of Mentoring: The Kid & The CEO, shared his personal story and several reentry organizations discussed their programs for mentoring inmates and ex-offenders.

SHAREFEST OKC 2009 was a great success with over 100 churches participating in 106 projects of community service across metropolitan Oklahoma City. Projects included landscaping, painting, and needed repairs at schools and refurbishing homes of the elderly. For more information, visit www.sharefestokc.org

10th Avenue North Band Approximately 350 people joined the TENTH AVENUE NORTH BAND on Saturday, April 4, to participate in a community service campaign sponsored by Annas House Foundation. Over 300 Easter/Spring baskets with goodies were collected for foster children in Oklahoma County. Event co-sponsors included Air 1 Radio 90.9 FM, Castle Falls, Faithlinks and Friends of 10th Street.

Dr. Tony Campolo TONY CAMPOLO was the featured speaker at the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Practice and Policy Lecture Series on April 2, 2009. Campolo addressed a standing room only audience on "What Role Should the Faith Community Have in the Provision of Human Services?" Fostering Hope Logo FOSTERING HOPE FOR CHILDREN CAMPAIGN. In partnership with OKDHS Foster Care, The Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives hosted gatherings in Durant and Bartlesville on February 24 and 26, respectively, to provide information to surrounding communities about foster care needs and service opportunities. The theme was “You may not be able to change the world, but you can change the world for one child”. The campaign encouraged individual involvement in foster care services which may transform the life of a child and, ultimately, the community. Events included a free meal and were open to the public.

In commemoration, the OFBCI shared the opportunity for faith and community groups to host a one-woman drama about Harriet Tubman, The Moses Of Her People. The sketch was presented by Delanie Brewer at no charge to interested organizations.


FREE MEDICAL CLINICS. The OFBCI, the Health Alliance for the Uninsured and the Baptist General Convention helped to facilitate a statewide meeting of free clinics on January 23, 2009. The meeting provided educational information as well as an opportunity for clinics from metropolitan and rural areas to network with each other.

Image of Mrs. Henry at podiumTHE CRYSTAL DARKNESS CAMPAIGN is a unique partnership between the local media, faith-based groups, schools, law enforcement, state agencies, recovery centers and the business community to address methamphetamine abuse. Oklahomans organized community watch groups to view a 30-minute documentary on January 13, discuss issues and develop ways to address meth addiction. The campaign offered faith communities tremendous ministry potential while building strategic partnerships across the state.
